People exposed to a traumatic event that places themselves or someone else's life at risk or threat subsequently can experience PTSD.
PTSD symptoms: reexperiencing thoughts of trauma, nightmares, flashbacks of events, physical or emotional arousal, sleep disturbance, irritability, anger, lack of concentration, guilt, shame, low self esteem. Avoidance of life, working too much, staying very busy, denial. Physical illness ie.. GI disturbances, headaches, severely tired, getting sick often.
Alcohol and/or substance abuse.
Recovery may incorporate medication however, most importantly is evidenced based treatment. Therapy derived from research with real people that has proven healing. Research proven medication that alleviates the intensity and frequency of symptoms so the individual may participate in therapy if symptoms are chronic. The most important message is that recovery from PTSD is possible and you do not have to suffer. Prolonging treatment can intensify the effects of PTSD.
